WORDING, TIMING AND TIPS

Before you send it.

A good birthday invitation does two jobs: it sets the mood, and it answers every question before anyone has to ask. Pick a design that matches the party you’re actually throwing, whether that’s cocktails for a 30th, a garden lunch for a 70th or pizza in the backyard, then fill in the essentials.

Every GatherRibbon invitation comes with its own RSVP page. Guests open your link, see the card and reply yes, maybe or no with their party size. They don’t need an account. You get one list of who’s coming, and you can email the invitation and send reminders from the same place.

What to include

  • Whose birthday it is, and the age if it’s a milestone they’re happy to share
  • Date, start time and, for longer parties, an end time
  • Venue name and full address, plus parking or entry notes
  • Dress code or theme, if there is one
  • Gift guidance: a registry, a favorite charity or “no gifts, please”
  • An RSVP date about a week before the party

When to send it

Send birthday invitations three to four weeks ahead, and six to eight weeks for a milestone party or one that asks guests to travel. Ask for replies about a week before the party so you can confirm food and seating.

Questions, answered.

How far in advance should I send birthday invitations?

Three to four weeks is right for most adult birthday parties. Give six to eight weeks for milestone birthdays, trips, or parties in busy months like December.

How do I say “no gifts” politely?

Keep it short and warm: “Your presence is the only present we need,” or “No gifts, please. Just bring your appetite.” If you’d like to point people somewhere, name a favorite charity instead. There are more ideas in our birthday wording guide.

Can guests reply without making an account?

Yes. Guests open your invitation link and reply yes, maybe or no, with their party size and an optional note. Only the host signs in.

Can I change the details after sending?

Yes. Edit the invitation from My events and save your changes. The link stays the same, so everyone sees the new time or place the next time they open it.
